Running Marathons, sponsored bike rides of ridiculous distances, stars in your eyes tribute
nights, raffles, tombolas and the contents of swear boxes to name a few sources have all
been used to raise money for an entire fleet of specialist bicycles for adults with
learning and physical disabilities.
Peter Gammon, a day service support worker at CARE Stanley Grange took over the reins
from Janine Flitton who started the ball rolling back in 2001. For the last four years
Peter, a keen cyclist himself, has organized many events to raise over £15,000 to
purchase, equip and maintain a fleet of 12 cycles which ensure that almost anyone, no
matter what type of disability, have an opportunity to enjoy the excitement of riding.
"We have also had a lot of support from other organisations" he says, "Blackburn with
Darwen council gave us the use of their facilities at Witton Park for a while but since
we purchased an adapted trailer the world, well, Central Lancashire is our oyster. We
have cycled along many highways and byways including Lancaster's famous Bull Beck to
Morcambe cycle path, which is one of the riders favourite routes."
CARE saw a need to provide cycling opportunities for adults with both physical and
learning disabilities. "Our fleet of cycles means anyone can enjoy cycling which is good
for their health, enjoyable and most of all fun" he says. "We are out nearly every week
throughout the spring and summer months and in the winter when it is a little too cold
and treacherous for cycles we go out walking, but that's another story!"
